1. Site News:

The site over recent weeks has been ungoing upgrading to better content, more video content and better guides from experts in the field.. One of these updates is in the DJ area which can be found here: Dj Tips and Tricks. I want to know what you would like to know. Any burning questions about DJing you would like to know? Just type it into the box at the botom of the DJ area screen and I will try to answer it.

I have a new blog up and running: Internet Music Marketing Blog. It's mainly for Beginners who would like to know how to promote their tunes and how to make some money with their music site.

If anyone wants a free review of their site, what can be done to increase your money potential or even why you aren't getting visitors to your music site, email me at the usual address with title "review" and we shall review your site :)

2. Site future update:

In the not to distant future I am planning a 2 projects: 1 huge upgrade to the site and 2, a software application. These will be only available to Newsletter subscribers. If you wanted to know any question about tracking, software, or even a review of your music then this upgrade will help you out big time. More about it in the near future, but it will be good.

3. Questions:

How do I stop the VSTs carrying on when I put a note down in the tracker

This is quite a common question, so what do we do?

1. Is to use automation and reduce the volume at set points. this is really good for strings. If you are using single hits it can be confusing and really long-winded doing it that way. So,

2. In record mode, press the Caps Lock underneath the area where you want the sound to stop. A little bar appears and the volume decreases at that set point. This is far the best way.

3. To press a key, then in the first dash next to the sample number...so normally it it looks like this for key C octave 3 sample position 1:

C-3 01 = = 00 0000

You can apply a certain volume to that key note. 00 is mute, 80 is loudest. So to change the volume to mute you would:

C-3 01 00 = 00 0000

To make the key sound louder raise the volume a touch:

C-3 01 20 = 00 0000

If you keep your finger down on the number key, the whole column will scroll down with that volume amount. In this way you can gradulally increase the volume so that your notes build up as long as the note is played at the same time, e.g.

C-3 01 20 = 00 0000
C-3 01 25 = 00 0000
C-3 01 30 = 00 0000
C-3 01 35 = 00 0000
C-3 01 40 = 00 0000 etc

How do I get that stuttering effect that I hear so much?

This effect is called a gate effect and is used mainly within strings. It has a choppy nature like the volume is muted then its open then its muted. It can easily be accomplished in our little tracker ;)

If we have a string sample (not VST) then this is quite simple. In much the same way as we stopped the volume with the previous question, we can adapt this to do our gate effect.

C-3 01 00 = 00 0c40
== 00 00 = 00 0c40
== 00 00 = 00 0c40
== 00 00 = 00 0c00
== 00 00 = 00 0c00
etc

In this instance we can let the sample run (hence only one note) and change the volume using the C command. By using different combinations of higher or lower volume (40 is highest volume, 00 is lowest volume) we can achieve the gate effect. If you input this into a track it sounds slow, so what we do is increase the speed of the track using the F command. So we would put F03 at the top of the next channel to increase the speed.

Now the effect sounds much better. It is quite a difficult concept to grasp, so I have included a small demo of it working which can be loaded into MT2. You can download it here. Half way down the track F06 is written which brings the track back to "normal" speed.

4. Free ebooks

These will help in your music promotion. If you are new to blogging then you are missing out on an up and coming revoution. It helps you to stay in contact with your audience, its free and most importantly it help the audience to leave messages and comments- the ultimate "stickiness" idea to keep visitors coming back to your site. So the first ebook is all about Blogging and how to do it well. You can directly download it here.

The second ebook is all to do with Podcasting which is a useful add-on to blogging. Promote your music the easy way and get a potential thousands of listeners. You can directly download it here.

5. Free VSTs

Now these are really cool. Big downloads but they are worth it, especially Intro. The first one is Intro and can be downloaded from the main link here. It is a really good synth that has some great techno/ dance sounds that just scream out "use me!"

The second is Endorphin which is a large download, and can be downloaded from the link here.

The third is 303-alpha which is a TB303 clone, and can be downloaded from the link here. It is not like Rubber Duck, link: http://www.d-lusion.com/downloads/Setup%20RD%202.12.exe. But it is good fun. It needs to played in octave 3 (press f3 on the computer keyboard to get in this octave).

Have a great holiday and see you in the New Year!
Happy music making.
