TechnoLite Ezine, Issue #013. The VST music making guide October 01, 2006 |
| Hi Welcome to another issue of Technolite
--------------
Site News: --------------
I am now 50% through my grand project which will dispell a huge amount of musical myth, it is a scorcher so bear with me while I continue refining. I shall give you one topic headline: How Myspace is not the best music site for you at all. Controversial I know but that is what I am working on...wiping away the truth from the lies. You will hear about it here first...it will be a big splash on the music scene though.
The site is starting to get some recognition throughout the Internet music community. Some of the artists that I have included on the Free to Download Music section http://www.make-your-own-dance-and-techno-songs.com/unsigned-techno-music.html have commented on how the site is a great resource for music making. Gloating over :)
Remember the survey that is always ongoing (good and bad comments needed), someone asked for demos of computer music in action. These are ongoing, however the Free to Download Music Section is full of computer generated music. I personnally selected those tracks for being pretty cool, but I also selected them on the basis of them using computer generated music techniques only, like the techniques used on the site. There are one or two that actually use MT2, or just MT2, a sampler and a computer.
Make sure that you download the DJ ebook (link at the bottom of this newsletter) as it contains information on DJ software, but more importantly contains more information of the creation of mixes, and mashes.

How do we use VSTs in our music?
If you do not know what VSTs are, or want loads for your collection, run over to the part in my site that deals with this great subject. Once done, come back to us and we shall continue.

Back already?
There is no real secret that I absolutely love VSTs. I can't help it. Just look at what you can do with them. They are powerful and more than often, they are free.
Most musicians love them, but there is one little flaw. The majority of softsynths need some sort of host programe to actually use them. Cubase and Fruityloop Studios are hosting programes, but they are alot of money. As a side point Ableton Live 5 does not host VSTs.
So what do we do? Well I know for a fact that I do not want to spend a whole host of cash, only because there is no need. MT2 will host the VSTs for you, no problem.
There are however some softsynths that do not need a hosting programe. The best of these is the top TB303 replicant - Rebirth which can be found here:
http://www.make-your-own-dance-and-techno-songs.com/best-techno-equipment.html
So how do we actually get a VST up and going. Well I have actually put into the depths of the site a small tutorial that actually explains how it is done. The direct link can be found here: http://www.make-your-own-dance-and-techno-songs.com/techno-beat.html
It is the creation of a beat, a nice dance beat. You really need to look at all the links especially the ones that say look at the MT2 tutorial. It is slightly in-depth. You don't have to have the loop from Indica Audio if you don't want to.
On the sceond page of the beat tutorial there is a small outline on the use of effect VSTs.
The difference between using the Drumatic3 Beat VST and another sound VST like SuperWave P8 (a cool Roland JD800 softsynth) is not really that much. Both need to be loaded into a host and both can be altered and played through the computer keyboard or through a USB keyboard.
Once you do load up VST up onto your computer (which you will, and in vast amounts) you will definitly hear then being used in many music tracks, commercial on non commercial. The main one is the superb SuperWave P8- a distinct synth sound. Apply VST effects to the synth to make your sounds sound more unique.
